I decided to do something different and not to tie myself down to a house.

I decided to live on a boat.

I trained as an Industrial Designer and now work as a consultant for Scientific Generics, a business and technology consultancy in Cambridge, England. I've always been interested in boats. Whilst at school, I renovated and raced a Vagabond class sailing dinghy and built a 5m touring kayak. I then went to university where I worked hard for four years and had little time for any other projects.

When I had settled into professional life, I felt ready for a new personal challenge. I also wanted to start investing my money in my own place to live rather than pouring rent down the drain. I wasn't very keen on buying a house because it is a big commitment and might restrict my options.

So, to kill several birds with one stone, I decided to build me a narrowboat.

By the way, 'uisce', the name of my boat, is Irish gaelic and means 'water'. It's pronounced 'Ishka'.
